Story By: D. Wilson Norne

Station: Super Bongeese

County: Bong

In a significant move to address the pervasive issue of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in Liberia, the Justice for Peace Commission (JPC), in partnership with the Foundation for International Dignity (FIND), has launched a major campaign in commemoration of the 16 Days of Activism. This global initiative is dedicated to opposing violence against women and children and aims to raise awareness about the rights of women and girls throughout the country.

During the launch of the campaign, on December 7, 2024 in Gbarnga Bong FIND's Executive Director, Mr. Aaron G.V. Juakollie, and JPC's Regional Coordinator, Mr. George Philip Mulbah, highlighted their organizations' commitment to advocating for the rights of women and girls. They emphasized, they have joined forces with human rights institutions to combat human rights violations that affect this vulnerable population.

Mr. Juakollie and Mr. Mulbah pointed out the troubling statistics surrounding gender-based violence, particularly in Bong County and across Liberia, where women and girls have faced numerous incidents of abuse. They underscored the importance of championing the rights of women and girls during the 16 Days of Activism, emphasizing the urgent need for action to address this crisis.

Both leaders expressed their deep concern regarding the alarming prevalence of rape cases in Liberia, despite the enactment of the Rape Law in December 2005. They questioned the law's effectiveness in curtailing sexual violence and urged the government of Liberia, particularly the Ministry of Gender and the justice sector, to fully implement the Rape Law and other crucial human rights legislation.

According to Juakollie and Mulbah, proper enforcement of these laws by the Ministry of Gender and the Ministry of Justice is essential to creating a safer environment for women and girls across the nation. Their campaign during the 16 Days of Activism aims to push for accountability and to foster a society where the rights of women and girls are respected and protected.
